Directed by Brad Anderson, The Silent Hour is a film about a cop who has a hard time accepting his hearing impairment. To make matters worse, Frank found himself stuck in an unprecedented situation, but the conflict brought out the best in him and changed his perspective. So, let’s find out what happened in The Silent Hour and if Frank is able to save the day.

Spoiler Alert

How did Frank Shaw lose his hearing?

Frank and Doug knew each other quite well, which is why I believe they made a great team. Together they had conducted many raids and solved many cases together. Frank was extremely passionate about his job. He was one of those people whose job was not merely a part of his life; it was his life. Frank and Doug went to arrest a man, but things didn’t go to plan. The man tried to escape, and Frank went after him. The fugitive got hit by a vehicle and probably died. Given Frank was right behind him, he got hit by the same vehicle, though fortunately he did not succumb to his injuries. Frank’s cochlea got damaged, and his hearing ability was reduced majorly. Frank had to use a hearing aid to hear properly, and he had a hard time coping with this disability. The doctors told Frank that there was a huge probability that Frank would completely stop hearing, which was why they advised him to start learning sign language. Frank had started learning sign language after his daughter pushed him to do so, but he was a reluctant learner, as, personally, he didn’t have any motivation to do so. Frank believed that his career, his life, and everything would come to an end if he stopped hearing completely. He was just not ready to entertain the perspective that people with disabilities can learn to live a normal life, too. Yes, it did need a little bit of effort, but still, it was not the end of the road. Frank was very close to his daughter, and she’d begged him again and again to attend her concert. Frank had gifted a guitar to his daughter on her birthday, and she wanted her father to be there when she played it for the first time. They were a team, and they both were quite passionate about their jobs.

Who wanted to kill Ava Fremont?

Later in The Silent Hour, Frank and Doug met once again in a pub. Doug asked Frank to go with him to talk to the sole witness of the Hyde Park shooting. Doug wanted to bring Frank along as the girl was deaf, and there was no official interpreter available in the Bedford police force at that moment. So Doug had to improvise and call in Frank. Frank didn’t want to be with Doug, as firstly, he didn’t know sign language that well, and secondly, it made him feel insecure about his hearing disability. But still, he agreed, and that was how Frank met Ava Fremont, the witness of the shootings. Ava said that she was a photographer, and that night, she’d gone on a stroll to click some pictures as it was a full moon night. She said that’s when she saw those men shooting two people, and she recorded it all on her phone. Frank went inside her washroom, and he saw that Naloxone, a medicine used to treat drug overdoses, was kept on one of her shelves. Frank knew that she hadn’t gone to take pictures but to score some drugs for herself. Frank didn’t say anything at the moment, and he and Doug both left the scene. Just after Frank left her house, he realized that he had left his phone at her place. He went back to take it, and that’s when he realized that those people involved in the Hyde Park shooting were at her place. They were going to kill Ava and plant evidence to make it look like a suicide, but before they could do that, Frank broke into the house through the window, saved Ava, and escaped from the flat.

How Did Frank save Ava?

The building was surrounded by those killers, who Frank expected to be some kind of fugitives. But it was not so. All of them were police officers who worked in the narcotics department. Ava, through the window of one of the flats, saw that two police officers come in uniform, and shake hands with one of the men in the building. Frank knew that they were stuck in the building and they needed outside help, as otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to escape. The building was going under redevelopment, and all the old residents had gotten eviction notices. That is why there was not one soul in the entire building, and it made life easier for the men who were hunting for Frank and Ava. Now the biggest problem was that Frank’s phone was still in Ava’s flat. His hearing aid was connected to his phone, and he knew that if the battery got low, he wouldn’t be able to hear anything. Frank got the biggest shock of his life when he realized that even Doug was part of the plan, and he knew from before that the cops would be coming to kill Ava. Doug told Frank that he should have been there in the first place. The narcotics team that had killed those two men on the streets was comprised of Lynch, Angel, Sal, Jake, and Farell. As Frank stated in the film, those men were just like thugs, and the only difference was that they had uniforms. Police officers like Lynch got a commission from the drug dealers, and on the non-payment of the set amount, extreme measures were taken. Frank speculated that the dealers would probably have gotten greedy and that Lynch would have killed him. Doug convinced Lynch to not kill Frank if he promised to stay silent about the entire issue. They offered him a sum of money, too, and Frank accepted it. Lynch injected drugs into Ava’s body and left her to die in her apartment. It felt like everything was back in order, but then Frank escaped once again, and he went straight to Ava’s flat to give her the Naloxone. Frank and Ava escaped once again, and they were aware that the odds did not favor them. Frank set a flat on fire to attract the attention of the people on the outside.

In The Silent Hour’s ending, Doug got killed in the chaos, and Frank whacked Lynch so hard that he fell unconscious to the ground. The fire brigade and the medics came, and both Frank and Ava were able to escape. It felt for a moment that Ava might not survive, but she defied the odds once again.

Why didn’t Frank wear his hearing aid in concert?

Frank and Ava developed a liking for one another. Ava came with Frank to attend his daughter’s concert. We saw that Frank didn’t wear the hearing aid at the concert, and it was proof that he had stopped stigmatizing his disability. I believe that he understood that not being able to hear was not the end of the world. He had stopped undervaluing his own potential and looking at himself in a condescending manner. Once, during the time he was hiding in the building, Ava told him that he didn’t need a hearing aid to attend a music concert. She told him how she could sense everything by looking at the people, observing their actions, and soaking up the energy of the palace. Frank decided to do that with his daughter’s consent. I believe Frank could finally see a silver lining, and Ava played a huge role in making that shift of perception happen. Frank’s daughter was extremely happy that her father came to see her perform, and Frank was happy that he could finally accept his reality. He had realized that there was something that was not in his hands, but still, that shouldn’t stop him. He needed to make the most of a given situation.
